Let’s Understand the First Trimester of Pregnancy:

Pregnancy usually lasts about 9 months and 10 days . If we divide this period into three parts, it becomes, the first three months, the middle three months, and the last three months. Among these ,the first three months are considered the most important . The first trimester is from the 1st week to the 12th week, and it is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). This is a very crucial period of pregnancy because the risk of miscarriage is higher  during these months. if this phase goes safely , then the risk in the later months become significantly lower. By the end of the first trimester ,the baby usually weights around 100 grams measures about 6-7 cm,  in length. During this time , the baby’s basic body structure and all major organs , such as the brain, heart , kidneys, spinal cod, etc, are developed .Though they become fully functional later. That’s why the first three months are very important for both mother and baby.

During the first trimester , mother also go through many changes . they  may experience  nausea ,weakness , heavy or tender breasts, white discharge ,lower abdominal pain , and frequent urination .These are common and happen due to normal hormonal changes.

What to ‘Do’ in the First Trimester of Pregnancy:

1. Confirming Pregnancy

If you miss your  period ( and usually have regular cycles), you should take a pregnancy test after 5-7 days of the missed period. use the firs morning urine sample.

  • If you see two red lines , it means the test is positive and you are pregnant.
  • If you see only one line, it means negative.
  • If the second line is faint, repeat the test the next day.

2. Visit the Doctor

If your test is positive , make an appointment with your doctor. take folic acid supplements regularly as advised, because folic acid is important  for the baby’s brain development. lack of folic acid may cause  developmental problems in the baby.

Your doctor will also recommend blood test and the first ultrasound. These should not be skipped . The first ultrasound is usually done between 7 and 9 weeks, by, which time the baby’s heartbeat can be confirmed.

3. Healthy Diet in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

  • Include protein-rich foods in your diet, such as paneer, tofu, soybeans, chickpeas, kidney beans, and lentils.
  • Eat foods rich in folic acid, like green leafy vegetables and dry fruits.
  • Drink plenty of fluids—at least 12–15 glasses of water daily. If you cannot drink plain water, you can also take coconut water, sweet lime juice, or Glucon-D.
  • Eat seasonal fruits every day to stay hydrated, get enough fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

4. Rest and Sleep
Due to hormonal changes, you may feel tired or exhausted during this time. This is common. To manage it:

  • Take short rests during the day (at least 1 hour).
  • Get 6–8 hours of good sleep at night.
  • Before sleeping, soak your feet in warm water to relax and sleep better.

3. Avoid Raw or Undercooked Foods

Do not drink raw milk. Avoid raw or undercooked meat, eggs, and fish. Wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly before eating, as they may contain pesticides or harmful chemicals.

4. Diet & Digestion
Many mothers experience acidity, nausea, vomiting, and bloating in the first trimester, which may reduce food intake. Don’t panic—this is normal and happens to around 80% of mothers. Try to maintain a well-balanced diet.

5. Medicine Use
If you are taking any medicines for pimples or hair loss, or anything other than vitamins, consult your doctor first. Never take any medicine without your doctor’s advice.
